When I saw the Wyze Cam, I had originally thought that no one could make an affordable home camera. My skepticism had kept me from pulling the trigger. The camera just sat in my Amazon shopping cart. Months later, I ran into an Add-on item that I needed and purchased the camera with it. In the two days I waited for shipping, I thought about why I purchased it. I never intended to purchase this camera with home security in mind. My use case was a bit more specific, I got the camera to keep a vigilant eye on my rabbits throughout the day. It was a simple task and at an extremely low price, my expectations were not high.
UNBOXING & FIRST LOOK
Opening the box was a bit of a delight. I wasn’t sure what to expect at that price range. To my surprise, the box had everything included. You had the camera, the power adapter, and a mounting kit. I figured there would be some sort of catch or gotcha moment. It felt too good to be true, I stopped and thought that I most certainly needed some sort of proprietary accessory or to buy into a specific service. I could not believe my eyes when I realized this was the real deal.
Looking at the cute little camera. It's entirely made out of plastic and felt a little cheap. It is an indoor camera so it does not have an IP rating. The unit itself is smaller than my palm. Once you pull the base from the camera it doubles in height. The camera is extremely flexible and the base can rotate making it extremely easy to find the perfect spot for placement. Connecting the camera and base together is a flimsy little hinge, I have concerns of it breaking too easily but so far has held along just fine.
Now digging into device specifications. The Wyze Cam V2 has support for Full HD playback. The lens has an F2.0 aperture with 8x digital zoom and a field of view of 110 degrees. Built-in are the 4 Infrared LEDs for use during the nighttime. Also embedded in the camera is a speaker, microphone, and a MicroSD slot with support for up to 32GB.
SETUP
Even though I had to manually type the SSID of my 2.4GHz WiFi network, the setup was extremely simple and easy to do. You can only set up and connect to the camera via the Wyze app, which I will touch on in more detail later. Another quick item to note is that the camera is unable to connect to 5GHz networks and that had me concerned as my home network is not the most reliable in terms of speed and connectivity. This camera does not move, so in an attempt to find a good location for my camera, I realized that the camera had a magnet at the bottom for the mounting kit included. I did not utilize the mounting kit and had just simply stuck it to a magnetic picture frame. The placement of the camera was odd but I was able the get a really good angle.
USAGE
Happy with the location, I wanted to really start putting the camera to the test. As I mentioned before, the only method to access the camera feed is via the application. I am not always tethered to my phone so having a desktop app or website to check on the feed would be beneficial. I was unable to find a statement from Wyze Labs about any sort of expansion for a desktop app. The app will be the biggest focus as it is used to control everything about the camera. Once set up was done correctly, you are greeted with a simple interface. While I give it props for not being complicated, I feel that the app leaves a little less than desired in its visual appeal. I cannot point my finger at the exact issue, but I digress. Selecting your camera opens the live feed with options to record, speak, mute, take a photo, and more. This page also allows you to check playback stored on a mounted microSD card and change specific camera settings like alert sensitivity. Backing out and selecting the notification tab allows you to check any alerts that have popped up. If the camera detects anything from sound to motion you will see it here.
Real-life usage was fairly simple to keep track of. Right off the bat, the camera does motion-detecting really well throughout the day. It seems to be that the camera can only track one thing at a time but I don’t think that really holds the device back. In one scenario, I placed the camera on my windowsill facing outside. The camera was able to see past the mesh and had almost no issue identifying moving subjects. The only time I saw an issue arise was during the night. I noticed that with my bunnies, the motion detection would not identify their big bright eyes as they ran around. I am not entirely sure why it was unable to detect the big glowing orbs as they moved throughout the night but it sure left me a little disappointed.
I did not experience connectivity issues throughout my time using the camera but I was constantly being annoyed as the camera would be triggered by almost any sort of sound. After adjusting the sensitivity for sound detection, the bombardment of sound notifications lessened immensely. I have also noticed that the camera will get rather warm. It leaves some concerns about the overall longevity of the device.

Final Outlook
If I were to sum up my time with the Wyze Cam V2 in one word. That word would great. The device is merely just that. It does what it has to do and it does it really well at an affordable price. In a market that is just is starting to pick up with serious competitors, Wyze secures a good position in the affordability portion of the industry. What sets this camera back is the lack of an IP rating, strictly limiting this camera to indoor settings. If you are looking for peace of mind when it comes to home security, maybe this will suffice. For others who have concerns about the device or who are looking for an outdoor camera that can pan and tilt, maybe spending more money on a different camera will make you feel better. All I can say is for the simple task that I am using it for, I can attest that this camera has left a wonderful impression.
